The Most Haunted Places in St. Louis

St. Louis is known for having some very active apparitions around town. From huge estates from a different time to trails that lead to hell, many places could compete for the title of most haunted location in St. Louis.

If you want to experience firsthand what it’s like to walk amongst some of these most haunted places, book a ghost tour with St. Louis Ghosts tonight.

What Is the Most Haunted Place in St. Louis?

Rather than choose one location as the most haunted, we rounded some of the spookiest sites in all of the Gateway City. Our favorites include:

  • Lemp Mansion
  • Stifel Theater
  • Chase Park Plaza Hotel
  • Seven Gates of Hell
  • Zombie Road
  • Bissell Mansion
  • Payne-Gentry House
  • Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery
  • The Lehmann House

The tragedy of the Lemp Mansion and the Lemp family that lived within it goes several generations deep. The Lemp family started with Johann Adam Lemp, a German immigrant who began selling homemade beer at his small grocery store.

Within a few decades, he was brewing the most popular beer in all of St. Louis. Johann became a very rich man, which his children and grandchildren inherited. However, several of them died at young ages from strange health conditions, and three shot themselves on the Lemp Mansion property.

Today, the mansion acts as a restaurant and inn, and many staff have outright quit because of the level of ghostly activity they’ve encountered. From objects going missing to the piano playing on its own to sightings of shadowy figures, there are countless unexplainable experiences that have taken place at the Lemp Mansion.

Stifel Theater

Between shows, staff at Stifel Theater have something else to keep them entertained: the resident ghost named Rachel.

Rachel is described as a very friendly ghost who will greet patrons in the lobby with a smile. She’s also known to sing, humming warm-up bars, and outright belting out in the balcony. (For what it’s worth, staff say she has a pretty decent voice.)

Workers believe that Rachel is likely the spirit of a woman who was murdered just down the street from the Stifel Theater before it was an operational venue. It’s believed that her soul has finally found a place where she can relax and find peace.

Chase Park Plaza Hotel

The Chase Park Plaza Hotel has not just one recognizable ghost, but two. The first is Chase Ulman, one of the men who built the hotel. He’s often seen in a tuxedo, walking around late at night after the guests have gone to sleep.

The other guest doesn’t have an identity but is simply known as the “red-haired woman.” While her name has been lost to time, it’s believed that this is the spirit of a bride who leaped from her third-story hotel room in the 1930s on her wedding night. While no one knows what caused her to jump, she’s still seen wearing a white dress to this day.

Seven Gates of Hell

Just outside St. Louis in Collinsville, there is a system of seven railroad trestles called the Seven Gates of Hell. The legend goes that if you speed through the first seven “gates” and drive through the seventh at midnight, you’ll be transported to hell — or a demonic creature will be transported from hell to meet you.

Even if you only venture through a few gates, you can already begin to feel the otherworldly effects taking place. Many people hear dogs barking when they’re walking through the gates. The barking gets louder and louder until it feels like the dogs are about to ambush the person — only for it to suddenly disappear. People believe these are hellhounds marking their territory. Animal carcasses, like deer and dogs, are also often found in the area, appearing like they were dragged there by something.

Zombie Road

Known as one of the most haunted roads in the United States, Zombie Road has less-than-friendly spirits and creatures lurking within the tall brush next to the trails.

Officially called the Meramec Greenway, generations of St. Louisans have headed down to Zombie Road if they wanted to get a fright or cuddle up with a date. Experiences range widely from person to person, with some feeling pockets of cold weather and others feeling like they’re being watched.

One woman was walking through the grass in chaps, heard an ear-piercing scream, and then felt a sharp pain on her leg. At home, she saw deep scratch marks on her leg — despite her thick clothing not having any marks whatsoever.

Bissell Mansion

Bissell Mansion gets its name from its original owner, Captain Lewis Bissell. Built in 1923, Bissell lived in the home for the rest of his life, along with his first and second wives.

Today, the Bissell Mansion operates as a murder mystery dinner theater, putting on shows and serving fine food in between acts. Yet, some special effects seem too good for guests. After the show, several guests have gone up to staff and complimented them for the realistic ghostly woman in a long, white gown. Staff then have to tell the patrons that those were not props but real spirits.

Captain Bissell himself is also seen around the property, often in the parking lot — looking back at his beloved house.

Payne-Gentry House

While some houses were the crime scene of horrific incidents, the Payne-Gentry House has a different past. This building held the office of Dr. William Payne, a physician and surgeon.

Payne often worked in pediatrics, and sadly, not all of his patients survived. After one of his patients passed away, Payne’s team would bury them in a small cemetery for children. These children are said to haunt the property to this day, sometimes being seen playing in the yard after dark.

Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery

If you wander around the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at night, you have the chance to run into a wide variety of ghosts.

Spirits have latched onto specific areas throughout the massive complex, which includes a total of 41 buildings. For example, people often spot an old Confederate General gazing out from the window of the commander’s office in Building 1, while another entity is spotted sitting behind a desk on the second floor.

From a ghost who yells “Dismissed!” to toilets flushing on their own, this cemetery has plenty of souls that are still very active.

Built in 1892, the Lehmann House was the dream project of Edward Rowse and his wife Ann Eliza. They spent the equivalent of $2 million today. The couple wanted to put in every last convenience and luxury so they could enjoy the home in their retirement.

Within a year, however, tragedy struck when Edward died in the main bedroom. The current owners believe that after spending a fortune building the place, Edward is unwilling to leave his dream home behind. While he’s not often seen, he’s regularly heard walking around the house and tinkering with different doors or objects.
